Who We Are
Protecting children and strengthening families
The Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Toronto (CCAS) has been protecting children from physical, emotional, sexual abuse and neglect for more than 110 years. Mandated under the Child and Family Services Act and funded by the Government of Ontario, CCAS is the second largest child welfare agency in greater Toronto.
When we receive a call concerning abuse or neglect of a child, our staff investigates, assesses the risk to the child and if needed, develops a plan to keep the child safe. In most cases, we are able to work with families to address safety concerns while keeping the child at home.
The Society first opened its doors in 1894 as the St. Vincent de Paul Children’s Aid Society to address community concerns over the needs of orphans and neglected children. We began with one paid employee, and grew rapidly to meet the increasing needs of the Catholic population. Today, CCAS employs approximately 580 full-time staff, including more than 350 child protection workers. Learn more about our history here.
Our Catholic Identity
CCAS benefits from the many supports provided by local parishes, Catholic schools, Catholic service agencies and community organizations providing services to our children and families. We recognize the importance of Catholic values and linkages with the larger Catholic community.
We offer pastoral services to clients, foster caregivers and staff who request spiritual and religious support. The Pastoral Consultant offers short-term counseling and referral services, particularly during times of stress, grief, illness, trauma or other difficulty.
