About Us

Who We Are

  • Protecting children from abuse and neglect is our mandate. At the Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Toronto (CCAS), we believe that every child has the right to be healthy, happy and safe. We’ve been protecting Catholic children from physical, emotional, sexual abuse and neglect, for more than 110 years.

  • Mandated under the Child and Family Services Act and funded by the Government of Ontario, CCAS is the second largest child welfare agency in greater Toronto. When people are concerned that a child may be abused or neglected, they call us. We are mandated to investigate reports received, and assess the risk to the child and, if needed, develop a plan to keep the child safe. We respect the cultural, racial and individual characteristics of the communities we serve.

Background

  • CCAS was founded in 1894. Under the leadership of the Archbishop of Toronto, community concerns over the needs of orphans and neglected children led to the establishment of the St. Vincent de Paul Children’s Aid Society. We began with one paid employee, and grew rapidly to meet the increasing needs of the Catholic population. Today, CCAS employs approximately 580 full-time staff, including 357 child protection workers. Learn more about our history here.

A Catholic Identity

  • CCAS benefits from the many supports provided by local parishes, Catholic schools, Catholic service agencies and community organizations providing services to our children and families. We recognize the importance of Catholic values and linkages with the larger Catholic community.

  • We offer pastoral services to clients, foster caregivers and staff who request spiritual and religious support. The Pastoral Consultant offers short-term counselling and referral services particularly during times of stress, grief, illness, trauma or other difficulty.
